One of dietary trends that’s been circulating the media and popular culture is the “green smoothie”. It’s been featured in many diets as a snack to prevent hunger cravings, or sometimes as the entire meal itself! While there are many uses for it, what exactly is a “green smoothie”?
A “green smoothie” derives its name from its bright green coloring, which comes from the ingredients that it is made of. Green smoothies, as it would imply, are composed primarily of leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach, and kale!
Other ingredients vary by recipe, but green smoothies commonly have other vegetables such as celery, carrots, and beets; fruits such as apples and bananas; and herbs such as ginger! This makes green smoothies come in a wide variety of flavor and texture.
When you drink a green smoothie, you are taking in all of the vegetables, fruits, and herbs it is composed of all at once. By doing so, you gain all of their nutritional benefits at once! They are also full of water, which makes them prevent bloat in your stomach later on.
While some people tout this as “detoxing”, this has no scientific basis. Green smoothies are great for giving you all of the vitamins and nutrients with a dose of water and fiber, but will not flush out any toxins. As with all beverages, drink responsibly!
