Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 containers whipped chocolate frosting
  • 1/2 bag thin potato chips such as Lay's Classic

Instructions

  1. Warm the oven up to 325°F. Lightly coat two 8-inch round cake pans with baking spray. Beat together cake mix, eggs, water, oil, and salt using an electric mixer set to medium speed until the mixture is smooth and well blended, about 3 minutes. Divide the resulting batter evenly between both prepared cake pans. Bake both in your preheated oven for about 26 minutes. You'll know you're done when you can stick a pick in and pull it out clean. Let the cakes cool in their pans on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Invert the cakes onto the wire rack to cool completely, an additional 20 more minutes.

  2. Trim the rounded tops off the cake layers to create flat, even surfaces. Place a cake round on cake plate and spread half of a container of frosting along the top and sides. Remove 3 to 5 whole chips from bag and set them aside to use as a garnish later. Place the remaining chips in a ziplock plastic bag, and give 'em a good smashing. Sprinkle 1 cup of the chip crumbs evenly on top of the frosted cake round. Place the second cake on top of the crushed chips. Spread your remaining frosting over the top and sides of the cake in an even layer.

  3. Lightly press the remaining chip crumbs around the bottom half of cake and along edges of the top. Garnish the top center with the chips you set aside. Ready for action! Cut it into 10 slices and enjoy.
