Ingredients

For the General Tso's Chicken:

  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 green onions chopped
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds

For the Garlic Rice:

  • 1 cup white rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions optional

Instructions

  1. To prepare the General Tso's Chicken, combine the cornstarch, salt, and black pepper in a large bowl. Add the chicken and toss to coat.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook until browned and crispy, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add the ginger and garlic to the skillet and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, honey, red pepper flakes, water, and cornstarch. Pour the mixture over the chicken and stir to combine.
  5. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 5-7 minutes, until the sauce has thickened and the chicken is cooked through.
  6. While the chicken is cooking, prepare the garlic rice. In a medium saucepan, combine the rice, water, vegetable oil, garlic, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low and cover. Cook for 18-20 minutes, until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.
  7. Fluff the rice with a fork and stir in the chopped green onions, if using.
  8. Serve the General Tso's Chicken hot, garnished with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Serve the garlic rice on the side.
