Filipino Spaghetti Sauce

Ingredients

  • two tablespoons cooking oil
  • one onion chopped
  • four cloves garlic minced
  • 500 g ground pork
  • 500 g Filipino-style hot dogs or sausages sliced diagonally
  • One cup tomato sauce
  • One cup banana ketchup Filipino-style sweet ketchup
  • One cup water
  • 1/2 cup tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar adjust to taste
  • one teaspoon dried oregano
  • one teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 500 g spaghetti noodles
  • Grated cheese for topping optional

Instructions

  1. Heat the cooking oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onions and minced garlic. Sauté until the onions become translucent and the garlic is fragrant.
  3. Add the ground pork to the skillet. Cook until it's no longer pink, breaking it up into smaller pieces as it cooks.
  4. Once the pork is cooked through, add the sliced hot dogs or sausages to the skillet. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Pour in the tomato sauce, banana ketchup, water, and tomato paste. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
  6. Add the brown sugar, dried oregano, and dried basil to the sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir everything together, then bring the sauce to a simmer.
  7. Let the sauce simmer gently for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly and the flavors meld together.
  8. While the sauce is simmering, cook the spaghetti noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain the noodles once cooked.
  9. Once the sauce is ready and the noodles are cooked, toss the spaghetti noodles with the sauce until evenly coated.
  10. Serve the Filipino spaghetti hot, topped with grated cheese if desired.
