Spider Trifle

I wonder if people would be less intimidated by spiders if they weren't associated with Halloween. Spiders are the good guys! They eat other bugs. Well, like it or not, spiders are a symbol of Halloween, and where there's a Halloween symbol, there's a corresponding dessert.

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix plus any ingredients the box's instructions call for
  • 12 oz. cream cheese softened
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 2 c. pumpkin puree
  • 1/3 c. sour cream
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp. pumpkin spice
  • 6 c. Cool Whip divided
  • 1 package Oreos crushed
  • chocolate syrup
  • Plastic spider For decoration, not for eating.

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350º and grease a 9"-x-13” pan. Let's make a creepy-crawly trifle.

  2. Prepare chocolate cake mix according to package directions and bake for 25 minutes. It's good to go when you stick a toothpick in and it comes out clean. Wait until it's cooled, then crumble into bite sized pieces.

  3. While we're waiting for the cake, let's make the pumpkin mousse. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, combine cream cheese and sugar, then beat until smooth. Add pumpkin puree, sour cream, vanilla and pumpkin spice and keep beating until smooth. Fold 2 cups of cool whip into the pumpkin mixture until fully combined.

  4. Combination sequence activated! Lay down a layer of chocolate cake on the bottom of your trifle dish, followed by a layer of pumpkin mixture, a layer of crushed Oreos, and a layer of Cool Whip. Repeat until the trifle is full, ending on cool whip.

  5. Drizzle syrup in a spiral motion from the inside out on the top of the trifle. Using a toothpick, start in the center and drag outward to the edge of the trifle to make a spider’s web. Place your decorative spider in the center of the web and place the trifle in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, though it's okay to leave it overnight if you need to. Pass out the spoons and dig in. Oh, and remember to take the spider off first.
