Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

Grease a baking dish lightly with butter.

Warm the butter in a pan and gently cook the garlic for about 1 minute.

Add the cream, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg, then stir and heat until just warm.

Arrange a layer of potato slices in the baking dish.

Pour some of the cream mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle a little cheese.

Repeat the layers until all the potatoes and sauce are used.

Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for another 15 to 20 minutes until the top is lightly golden and the potatoes are tender.

Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
