Ingredients

  • 1 pound 450g ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 24-ounce jar of your favorite marinara sauce
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups uncooked lasagna noodles broken into smaller pieces
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish optional

Instructions

  1. Heat a large, deep skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef or turkey and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until it's browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes until it becomes translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, until fragrant.
  3. Pour in the entire jar of marinara sauce and 2 cups of water. Stir to combine everything evenly.
  4. Add the broken lasagna noodles to the skillet. Make sure they are evenly distributed throughout the sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  5. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the skillet, and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the noodles are tender, stirring occasionally. You may need to adjust the cooking time based on the type of noodles you use.
  6. While the lasagna is simmering, preheat your oven's broiler.
  7. Once the noodles are tender, season the mixture with dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir in the shredded mozzarella cheese, reserving some for topping. Dollop spoonfuls of ricotta cheese over the top and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.
  8. Transfer the skillet to the oven and broil for 2-3 minutes or until the cheese on top is bubbly and golden brown. Keep a close eye on it to avoid burning.
  9. Remove the skillet from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
