How any times have you found yourself in the kitchen trying out a new recipe when you have found yourself unprepared and having to improvise since you don’t have the appropriate equipment? I have been cooking since I was eight years old and to this day still find myself finding things I feel stupid for not having on hand. A well stocked kitchen will make cooking a smoother more enjoyable process. Stop getting stuck halfway through a recipe! A well stocked kitchen will save you everytime!
Measuring Utensils:
This one is a no brainer, if you want to follow a recipe you need to be able to measure ingredients! Make sure that you always have access to graduated measuring cups for dry ingredients, liquid measuring cups, and a full set of measuring spoons.
Knives:
Another very basic staple for any kitchen. The best knives are made of high carbon stainless steel since they sharpen a lot easier than regular stainless steel. The knives you absolutely must have are; a bread knife, chef’s knife, paring knife, and a utility knife. These should cover most basic needs you will have; however, it is always good to be prepared and if your budget allows look into having a full set which would include a boning knife, carving knife, and fillet knife.
Kitchen Thermometers:
This is something I am ashamed to admit I often forget to keep around; I figure if the chicken isn’t pink we should be fine. This obviously isn’t the smartest method of checking if meat is done; especially with pork and poultry. Since most people aren’t looking to make food poisoning a dinner option, a good meat thermometer will save you from a family epidemic!
Pots and Pans:
While most people have plenty of pots and pans they usually never seem to have the right one. In addition to a variety of sizes of sauce pans and frying pans, every kitchen should be equipped with a double boiler, Dutch oven, and a vegetable steamer. Other handy pans include; griddles, omelet pans, and woks.
Appliances:
This is where a lot of kitchens fall short. Most kitchens have what they see as the necessities; a coffee pot, toaster, and blender. These are obviously useful to have around, but to be able to tackle any recipe head on you need to be a little better prepared. You can’t very well cook a roast in the coffee pot! At the minimum I recommend investing in a food processor, electric mixer, and a slow cooker. If you bake frequently definitely spend the extra money and splurge on a stand mixer; these are a life saver and can save you hours!
Ovenware:
If you only use your oven to make dinner than most likely you will just need various sized casserole dishes. If you area baker you will need a lot more than that; cookie sheets, cupcake tins, loaf pans, pie plates, and cake pans are all a great start to your ovenware collection.
Don’t feel like you have to spend a ton of money stockpiling your kitchen. Garage sales and thrift stores are a great place to find appliances and dishes for a steal. Once your kitchen is complete you will never again find yourself trying to bake a cake in a pie tin!
