Stromboli Is The Best Thing You’ve Never Had

Stromboli is a magical food which many people haven’t heard about outside of the East coast. Despite its fancy and Italian-sounding name, this dish actually originated in America, specifically in Philadelphia by Italian-American immigrants.

The stromboli’s name comes from the island of Stromboli, located in Italy- though some people say it was named after the Italian movie Stromboli! No matter what its origins may be, this cheesy and delicious turnover has won our hearts and stomachs in equal measure.

Try one at home for an extra hearty dinner- trust me, you will definitely have leftovers for lunch the next day while you’re at it. While the recipe for a stromboli is similar to a calzone in that it is made with pizza dough, strombolis typically contain primarily cheese and Italian meats, and are rolled into cylinders.

We’ve decided to add a twist with mushrooms and sausage in this recipe, as well as some tomato sauce to ensure that it doesn’t go dry, even after being baked in the oven. If you’re not a fan of meat, feel free to substitute the sausage in favor of some sauteed mushrooms-their meaty flavor will still go amazingly with the cheese and tomato sauce!
