Ingredients

  • 2 ounces of bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 1 sugar cube or 1/2 teaspoon of granulated sugar
  • 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash of orange bitters optional
  • Orange peel for garnish
  • Ice cubes
  • Water for muddling

Instructions

  1. Start by chilling your Old-Fashioned glass. Fill it with ice cubes and set it aside while you prepare the cocktail.
  2. place the sugar cube (or granulated sugar) along with a few drops of water in a separate mixing glass or sturdy tumbler. Using a muddler or the back of a spoon, gently muddle the sugar to dissolve it. You want to create a sugary paste without crushing the ice.
  3. Add the Angostura bitters and the optional dash of orange bitters to the sugar mixture. Stir everything together to combine.
  4. Pour the bourbon or rye whiskey into the mixing glass with the sugar and bitters mixture. Stir gently for about 20-30 seconds, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  5. Discard the ice from the chilled Old-Fashioned glass. Add fresh ice cubes to the glass, filling it about three-quarters full.
  6. Strain the cocktail mixture from the mixing glass into the prepared glass, allowing the liquid to cascade over the ice.
  7. Twist an orange peel over the drink to express the oils. Rub the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop it into the drink as a garnish.
  8. Give the cocktail a final gentle stir with a long cocktail spoon to ensure everything is well-mixed.
  9. Sip and enjoy your perfectly made Old-Fashioned!

Recipe Notes

Feel free to adjust the ingredients and proportions to suit your personal taste preferences. Some people prefer a sweeter Old-Fashioned and may add a bit more sugar, while others may prefer a stronger whiskey flavor and use less sugar. Experiment and find your perfect balance!
