Smooth icing for clean cake finishes and simple decorations

Fondant is a smooth, flexible icing that gives cakes a clean and polished finish. Making it at home is simpler than it sounds and uses just a few basic ingredients. The texture turns soft and easy to work with after resting properly. This recipe is great for covering cakes or shaping simple decorations.

Homemade Fondant

Ingredients

  • 4 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 1 packet unflavored gelatin
  • 1 quarter cup cold water
  • 1 half cup light corn syrup
  • 1 tablespoon glycerin
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A small amount of vegetable shortening for greasing

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle the gelatin over cold water in a small bowl and let it sit for 5 minutes until softened.
  2. Gently heat the gelatin mixture until fully dissolved, then stir in the corn syrup, glycerin, and vanilla extract. Remove from heat.
  3. Place the powdered sugar in a large bowl and make a well in the center. Pour the warm liquid mixture into the sugar.
  4. Stir with a spoon until it forms a sticky dough, then knead by hand on a lightly greased surface until smooth.
  5. Shape the fondant into a ball, coat lightly with shortening, wrap tightly in plastic wrap, and let it rest for 30 minutes before use.
