This potato gratin feels rich without being overwhelming. Thin slices of potato bake slowly in a creamy sauce that turns soft and flavorful. The top develops a light golden finish that adds just enough texture. It works well as a calm dinner option that feels complete and satisfying.

Potato Gratin

Ingredients

  • 4 medium potatoes thinly sliced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 half cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic finely minced
  • 1 half teaspoon salt
  • 1 half teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 quarter teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup grated cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a baking dish lightly with butter.
  3. Warm the butter in a pan and gently cook the garlic for about 1 minute.
  4. Add the cream, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg, then stir and heat until just warm.
  5. Arrange a layer of potato slices in the baking dish.
  6. Pour some of the cream mixture over the potatoes and sprinkle a little cheese.
  7. Repeat the layers until all the potatoes and sauce are used.
  8. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for another 15 to 20 minutes until the top is lightly golden and the potatoes are tender.
  10. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
