If you grew up anywhere near a food court in the ’90s or 2000s, you probably remember the frosty, orange-vanilla drink that always seemed to hit the spot on a hot day. The good news is you don’t need a mall trip to enjoy it anymore β€” this copycat version comes together in about ten minutes with just a handful of ingredients and a blender.

Why This Recipe Works

This drink nails the same sweet-tart, creamy-icy balance that made the original so popular. It’s quick, it uses pantry staples, and it doesn’t require any special equipment beyond a good blender. Somewhere between a smoothie and a milkshake, it’s thick enough to feel indulgent but light enough to sip any time of day.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Blend Time 5 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces frozen orange juice concentrate half of a standard 12-ounce can, preferably Minute Maid
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Set the frozen orange juice concentrate on the counter to partially thaw, about 5 minutes. While it softens, place four serving glasses in the freezer to chill.
  2. Add the partially thawed concentrate to a high-powered blender along with the ice, milk, water, sugar, and vanilla extract.
  3. Blend on low speed for about 5 seconds to break up the ice, then increase the speed to high and blend for about 1 minute, until smooth. The texture should be thinner than a milkshake β€” more like a frothy, slightly icy smoothie.
  4. Pour immediately into the chilled glasses and serve right away, while it's still frosty and thick.

Tips for the Best Results

Chill your glasses first. Pop your serving glasses in the freezer for about five minutes before blending. A cold glass helps the drink stay thick and frosty for longer instead of watering down quickly.

Serve it immediately. This isn’t a make-ahead drink. The icy, frothy texture is best in the first few minutes after blending, so pour and serve right away rather than storing leftovers.

Choose your orange juice concentrate carefully. Most brands of frozen orange juice concentrate will work, but Minute Maid is often recommended for its balance of tart and sweet flavor, which comes closest to the classic version.

Serving Suggestions

This drink works well as a refreshing addition to a cookout, especially alongside smoky, grilled dishes like burgers or ribs β€” the bright citrus flavor helps balance out richer, smokier foods. It also makes a fun morning drink paired with a simple breakfast of eggs and bacon. For a lighter, breakfast-friendly version, try stirring in a spoonful of Greek yogurt and reducing the sugar slightly. For a more dessert-like treat, top it with whipped cream or whipped topping.
