Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper optional
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup milk you can use whole milk or any milk you prefer
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter or vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, salt, and black pepper if using. This mixture provides the base for your batter and ensures everything is well combined.
  2. Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, beat the egg and then mix in the milk and melted butter (or vegetable oil). The wet ingredients will add moisture and richness to your batter.
  3. Combine the Ingredients: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until the batter is smooth and well combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few small lumps are okay. The batter should be thick enough to coat the hot dogs but still pourable.
  4. Heat the Oil: In a deep pot or deep fryer, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). You’ll need enough oil to fully submerge the corn dogs. If you don’t have a thermometer, test the oil by dropping in a small spoonful of batter—if it bubbles and rises to the surface, it’s ready.
  5. Prepare the Hot Dogs: Pat your hot dogs dry with paper towels. For best results, insert wooden skewers into the hot dogs before dipping them in the batter.
  6. Dip and Fry: Dip each hot dog into the batter, ensuring it’s fully coated. Carefully lower the coated hot dog into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Serve your homemade corn dogs with your favorite condiments like mustard, ketchup, or a spicy dipping sauce. Enjoy them hot for the best taste!
